Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province in northern China, has a population of about 4.3 million. It keeps the single national standard, the Asia/Shanghai zone at UTC+8, observed throughout China without daylight saving, so local time stays eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time all year. The city sits inland on the loess uplands of the north. As a provincial capital and industrial centre, Taiyuan is one of the principal urban areas of the northern interior.
