The Round-the-World Jet Lag Challenge
A round-the-world (RTW) trip that circumnavigates the globe crosses every time zone — a theoretical 24-hour shift in total. The good news: you don't experience all that disruption at once. Each leg creates its own adjustment period, and smart sequencing minimizes cumulative fatigue.
East vs. West Circumnavigation
Which direction should you travel around the world?
- Westward (e.g., Korea → Europe → Americas → Korea): Each jump delays your clock — the easier direction. Your body gets to "sleep in" at each stop.
- Eastward (e.g., Korea → Americas → Europe → Korea): Each jump advances your clock — harder, but often the direction of popular ticket routes.
If you have flexibility, choose the westward route. Most RTW travelers find westward circumnavigation substantially less fatiguing.
Optimal Stop Duration
For full circadian adaptation at each destination:
- Minimum 5–7 days per major time zone jump (6+ hours)
- Smaller jumps (1–3 hours): 2–3 days is often sufficient
- Rushing through more than one major zone per week leads to cumulative circadian debt
Sequencing Destinations Strategically
Group geographically and temporally adjacent countries into a single "zone cluster" to minimize jumps:
- Cluster 1: East/Southeast Asia (UTC+7 to UTC+9)
- Cluster 2: Middle East/India (UTC+3 to UTC+5:30)
- Cluster 3: Europe (UTC+0 to UTC+3)
- Cluster 4: Americas (UTC-3 to UTC-8)
Moving cluster by cluster rather than jumping around the world randomly limits daily time shifts to 2–4 hours at a time.
Managing a RTW Trip Without Burning Out
- Build one "reset week" per continent with no flight days — stay in one city and fully adapt
- Maintain consistent sleep timing with flexible destination activities rather than forcing early starts
- Keep a journal or spreadsheet tracking your current UTC offset, sleep quality, and energy levels
- Recognize warning signs of accumulated fatigue: persistent insomnia, irritability, difficulty concentrating
Technology Tools for RTW Planning
Google Flights Matrix, Kiwi.com, and Airtreks specialize in multi-city and RTW itinerary building. For time zone tracking across your journey, TimeFYI's world clock and timezone offset tool can help you visualize the full sequence of your trip's time zone shifts before you depart.
