Reading a World Time Zone Map
A world time zone map color-codes regions by their UTC offset. The vertical bands represent the theoretical 15°-wide zones, but the actual colored regions deviate significantly due to political and practical decisions. The map is essential for quickly seeing which countries share a time zone and where the biggest jumps occur.
Key Regions and Their Zones
- East Asia: China (UTC+8), Japan and Korea (UTC+9), both among the most economically active time zones
- South Asia: India (UTC+5:30) and Nepal (UTC+5:45) stand out as half- and quarter-hour offsets
- Europe: Three main zones — WET/UTC+0 (Portugal/UK in winter), CET/UTC+1 (most of continental Europe), EET/UTC+2 (Eastern Europe)
- Americas: Ranges from UTC−10 (Hawaii) to UTC−3:30 (Newfoundland, Canada)

The Widest Single Time Zone
China's UTC+8 zone is the widest by land area of any single-zone country. At its western edge (Xinjiang), the sun rises and sets much later by the clock than at its eastern edge (Shanghai). The sun can rise as late as 10 AM in western China by standard clock time.
The Smallest Time Zone Jump
The border between Norway's mainland and the Svalbard archipelago creates one of the most minor practical differences — both are UTC+1 in winter, so there is no jump at all. Compare this to the Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait, where Big Diomede (Russia, UTC+12) and Little Diomede (US, UTC−9) are only 3.8 km apart but 21 hours different in clock time.
Surprising Zone Assignments
- Spain is geographically in UTC−1 but uses UTC+1 (CET)
- France uses UTC+1 yet has territories spanning UTC−10 to UTC+12
- Kiribati (UTC+14) is further east than the Date Line on a clock, creating a paradox on the map
- North Korea briefly used UTC+8:30 from 2015–2018 before reverting to UTC+9
