Le jour de l'année avec la plus courte période de lumière diurne, survenant lorsque l'inclinaison axiale de la Terre est le plus éloignée du Soleil. Dans l'hémisphère nord, il tombe vers le 21-22 décembre ; dans l'hémisphère sud, vers le 20-21 juin.
