Internationale Anrufe: Wann in verschiedenen Zeitzonen anrufen

The Golden Rule of International Calls

Before making any international call, check the recipient's local time — not just the time zone name. Knowing someone is in "Europe" isn't enough; you need to know if it's currently 9 AM or 11 PM there. A two-second check on a world clock app can be the difference between a grateful colleague and a very irritated one.

The Global Courtesy Window

Calling between 9 AM and 9 PM in the recipient's local time is universally acceptable. Calling between 7–9 AM or 9–10 PM is generally tolerable for work calls with a brief apology. Calling before 7 AM or after 10 PM is only for true emergencies.

Common International Call Windows

Korea (KST, UTC+9) → USA East Coast (EST, UTC-5)

14-hour gap. The best window for mutual convenience is extremely narrow. Korea morning = USA previous evening. KST 9:00 AM = EST 8:00 PM previous day. For a 9–10 PM EST call, Koreans call at 10–11 AM next day KST.

Korea (KST) → Europe (CET, UTC+1)

8-hour gap. Korea 4–6 PM = Europe 8–10 AM. This is the most natural business call window between Korea and Central Europe.

USA West Coast (PST, UTC-8) → Europe (CET, UTC+1)

9-hour gap. The common overlap window is very limited: Europe 9–11 AM = PST midnight-2 AM. Truly no good mutual window during standard working hours. Schedule async or accept off-hours calls.

DST Complications

Daylight Saving Time shifts these calculations seasonally — and the transition dates differ between the US, EU, and non-DST countries. Key traps:

  • US DST starts in March; EU DST starts 2–3 weeks later. During this window, US-Europe gaps are temporarily different.
  • Australia observes DST in the southern hemisphere's summer (Oct–Apr), opposite to the northern hemisphere.
  • Countries like Japan, China, and India do not observe DST — their gaps with DST regions shift seasonally.

Practical Tips

  • Use TimeFYI's city comparison to check exact local times before calling
  • For recurring calls, schedule in one party's time zone and use a calendar tool that auto-converts for all attendees
  • Add the recipient's time zone as a secondary clock on your phone before traveling
  • Never assume: confirm time zones explicitly at the start of any international scheduling conversation

Emergency Calls

If you must call during someone's nighttime, say so immediately: "I'm so sorry to call at this hour — this is genuinely urgent." This small acknowledgment dramatically reduces resentment and sets the right tone for the conversation.
