Taipei, in northern Taiwan near 25 degrees north latitude, has a population of about 7.9 million in its metropolitan area. It observes a UTC+8 offset and does not use daylight saving, so its clocks remain eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time in all seasons. Sitting close to the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere, the city has a subtropical climate with modest seasonal change in day length. Its fixed offset keeps the gap between local and international time constant across the year, and Taipei shares the UTC+8 band with mainland China, Hong Kong and much of eastern Asia.
