Overview
Spanning the strait that separates Europe from Asia, Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey, with roughly 15.7 million inhabitants, although Ankara is the national capital. Turkey maintains a permanent UTC+3 offset, and Istanbul does not change its clocks for daylight saving; local time stays three hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time in every season. The city sits near 41 degrees north latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. Its position across two continents makes it an unusual case of a single metropolis divided between Europe and Asia under one clock, and the fixed offset keeps its time stable rather than shifting in spring and autumn.
