As the capital of Mexico, Mexico City anchors a metropolitan population of about 12.3 million on a high plateau near 19 degrees north latitude. It observes Central Standard Time at UTC-6, and following the end of nationwide daylight saving the city no longer changes its clocks seasonally, keeping local time six hours behind Coordinated Universal Time throughout the year. Situated within the tropics of the Northern Hemisphere but at considerable elevation, the city has a mild climate despite its low latitude.
